So, How Will I Read My Favourite Blogs Now?...

Google Reader is being retired folks! From 1st July 2013 it will be no more (report in the Guardian here).

Read more about it here: Powering Down Google Reader  and here for How can I download my Reader data?

Quote from Google's own official blog:
"We have just announced on the Official Google Blog that we will soon retire Google Reader (the actual date is July 1, 2013). We know Reader has a devoted following who will be very sad to see it go. We’re sad too.
There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience.

To ensure a smooth transition, we’re providing a three-month sunset period so you have sufficient time to find an alternative feed-reading solution. If you want to retain your Reader data, including subscriptions, you can do so through Google Takeout."

So... it looks like I'll be moving the feeds for following everyone else's lovely blogs across to Bloglovin instead :)

(Although I will really, really miss all the stuff I tagged by topics and folders in Google Reader - so I made need to research other alternative to Bloglovin *sigh*.) Anyone have some good suggestions for other blog-readers? (It must be able to use on PC + Kindle Fire HD + Android SmartPhone... so I can sync my reader across all formats :) !)

Apparently CNet has posted up five alternative products, but we can’t see anything that’s going to be as useful as Reader.

For what it’s worth, this petition has been set up: Google: Do not remove Google Reader on July 1, 2013

P.S. You can Follow my blog with Bloglovin

    EDIT!!!:
Thanks to Cidell's excellent suggestion I checked out the Feedly website - and check out

Transitioning from Google Reader to feedly. Quote: "When Google Reader shuts
down, feedly will seamlessly transition to the Normandy back end. So if you are a Google
Reader user and using feedly, you are covered: the transition will be seamless.

I think my back-up plan will be to export to a couple of new reader-formats and see which ones I like the best :)!

    1. I know!!! I'm trying Feedly and I think I may stick with it. They have a nice one click way of importing my feeds and most importantly, it saved all my bookmarks and tags from before!!

    2. I couldnt believe it when I found out about this this morning! I can't use bloglovin at work (it's blocked!), and I use google reader via Flipboard on my iPad and phone, so I'm going to have to rethink my options!

      (*shakes fists at Google*)

    3. Bit of a shock! I'm trying Feedly too and getting on well with it so far. I found the video tutorial really useful as it isn't quite as intuitive IMO as Reader.

    4. I'm reading this via feedy, been using it today and it seems to work fine, just takes a bit of getting used to and reminds of how sometimes I don't like change!

    6. I'm really annoyed about this. Google Reader is awesome!

I tried bloglovin this morning but didn't like it. I tweeted as much and got a reply from the CEO of bloglovin asking what I didn't like about it: I told him I didn't like having to open a browser window for each new post since I read around 120 different blogs.

I have started with Feedly on someone else's recommendation and it's more like Google Reader, and it was easier to import my list of blog subscriptions. It will take some getting used to though. If anyone finds a reader that compares to Google reader I would love to know about it!

    10. I'm trying Feedly but it's early days yet for me to decide if it's a keeper. I very often multi-tag articles/blog-posts in Google Reader and Feedly has only imported 1-tag per post (the tag that's higher up the alphabetical list, so if I tagged it fitting + sewing + London... only the tag fitting shows up :( !

Apparently, lots of users are asking Feedly to introduce multiple-tagging though, so hopefully they change it before Google Reader shuts down in July.

Sadly, Bloglovin doesn't seem to have a tagging feature - well not that I can find?
